Georgian PM, president express condolences to Eduard Shevardnadze’s family and friends

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili expressed his condoles to the family and friends of the deceased ex-President, Eduard Shevardnadze.

"Eduard Shevardnadze was a politician of international importance," according to Garibashvili's letter of condolence.

Former Foreign Minister of the USSR, ex-President of Georgia, Eduard Shevardnadze passed away in Tbilisi on July 7. He was 86.

He died after suffering from a long lasting illness, according to the ex-president's press service.

"I express my regret at the death of former Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze. Shevardnadze's contribution to the formation of Georgia's geopolitical role in the modern world is especially important. Eduard Shevardnadze was a politician of international importance, who contributed greatly to the end of the 'cold war' and establishment of the new world order. I offer my condolences to his family and friends," Garibashvili said.

Garibashvili also created a special commission for Shevardnadze's funeral.

Georgia's former President Mikheil Saakashvili and the incumbent President Giorgi Margvelashvili also expressed their condolences to Shevardnadze's family.
