Georgia, Japan talk organizing more trade missions and business forums

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Oct. 29

By Maryana Akhmedova – Trend:

Georgia has great potential to establish closer economic ties with Japan, Natia Turnava, the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, said, Trend reports via Georgian media.

Turnava held an online meeting with the CEO of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) Nobuhiko Sasaki, during which the current and future activities of the organization in Georgia and the priority directions of cooperation were discussed.

The meeting was also attended by Mikheil Khidureli, Director of the "Produce in Georgia" Agency and the Ambassador of Japan to Georgia Imamura Akira.

The meeting focused on the possibility of holding more business forums and organizing trade missions between Georgia and Japan. It was noted that such activities contribute to the alignment of business circles, which will further have a positive impact on economic statistics.

Georgian Minister cited the example of the Agreement on Mutual Protection of Investments, which entered into force in 2021. The agreement includes important mechanisms to protect Japanese investments in Georgia and Georgian investments in Japan.

"Such economic fields, as energy, transport, logistics, high technologies, agriculture, and tourism make it possible to develop closer and mutually beneficial ties between Georgia and Japan," Turnava said.

Meanwhile, Japanese investments to Georgia from 2010 through 2020 amounted to $158.4 million, while the investments over first 6 months of 2021 increased 155 times, compared to 2020.
