Georgia to fine enterprises for environmental damage

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Nov. 26

By Maryana Akhmedova – Trend:

Georgia will introduce new liabilities to the private sector within the framework of environmental legislation, Trend reports via Georgian media.

The regulation imposes the principle, according to which the subject of activity is obliged to compensate the damage caused to the environment. The changes will enter into force from July 1, 2022.

The Law introduces the principle of strict liability for enterprises that are objects of increased risk and are considered in the first annex of the Environmental Assessment Code, Nino Tandilashvili, the Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture explained.

“In case of damage to the environment, enterprises will be responsible for repairing the damage to the environment and provide adequate funds for it. Measures to remedy this damage will be agreed with the Ministry,” the deputy minister said.

“If such enterprises violate their obligations and do not meet specific requirements within the set timeframe, they will be subject to high fines,” Tandilashvili added.
