Georgia, Japan plan to work towards free trade agreement

The free trade agreement between Georgia and Japan would create new opportunities for strengthening and deepening trade and economic relations, which will further encourage business representatives, the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia Natia Turnava said, Trend reports via the press service of the Ministry.

The issue was addressed at an online meeting between Natia Turnava and the Deputy Foreign Minister of Japan Honda Taro, during which the sides discussed the priority areas of bilateral relations.

The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia Genadi Arveladze and the Ambassador of Georgia to Japan Teimuraz Lezhava.

The sides positively assessed the cooperation between Georgia and Japan in the field of investment.

The implementation of the agreement on mutual protection of investments will strengthen bilateral business ties, which will have a positive impact on strengthening economic relations between the two countries, Turnava said.

Turnava expressed hope that Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), which has recently entered Georgian energy sector, will soon be followed by other representatives of Japanese business.

The parties also discussed the possibilities of cooperation in transport, port facilities, transit, and energy sector.

According to the statistics, Japanese investments in Georgia over the three quarters of 2021 increased by 32 percent, while the bilateral trade over first 10 months of 2021 increased by 11 percent, with exports increasing by 26 percent, the ministry said.
