By Maryana Akhmedova – Trend:

The Caucasus Nature Fund (CNF) plans to initiate a unified Biodiversity Monitoring Coordination Unit at the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia in 2022, the CNF Country Director Tea Barbakadze told Trend.

According to Barbakadze, this biodiversity monitoring system is a long-term capacity-building program, which will be supported from a technical and expertise viewpoint.

“There some fresh ideas that CNF would like to implement in Georgia in the nearest future,” she noted.

The country director added that CNF also plans to further increase the network of the protected areas in Georgia in 2022, so they can meet national and international requirements.

Meanwhile, the CNF continued supporting 11 out of 21 selected national park administrations in Georgia in 2021, Barbakadze said.

“More than 1 million euros was distributed and granted through the different channels for the ensuring financial sustainability of Georgia’s protected areas system. Our financial support is being increased gradually along with the increased number of supported parks since 2009,” she added.

“CNF is in close communication and cooperation with the Government of Georgia through the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture and the Agency of Protected Areas under the Ministry. At the same time, we cooperate with local communities, local, national and international non-governmental organizations, local and international experts, corporate and private sector, that are willing to contribute to the nature conservation in the Caucasus,” the country director concluded.
