BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 7. The initiative of the Government of Georgia on building more hydropower plants is very timely, Giorgi Abramishvili, Director of Georgian Renewable Energy Development Association (GREDA), said, Trend reports via Georgian media.

“Georgia needs to decrease its energy dependency and use the most of its water resources, which is basically the most sufficient source for renewable energy production in the country,” Abramishvili said.

He also noted that this initiative is extremely important in terms of attracting investments and increasing cooperation with the private sector, which will contribute to the sustainable economic growth of the country in general.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili said that Georgia needs to attract additional investments in energy sector and build more hydropower plants.

"The electricity consumption in Georgia is growing, while generation is significantly lagging behind consumption, which is a great danger for the country, for energy security and energy independence in general,” Garibashvili said.
