BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 20. Georgia has allocated 968.5 million Georgian lari ($317.5 million) for the development of the country’s highland regions until 2023, Trend reports via the Georgian Government Administration.

The issue was discussed at the meeting between the Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili and the Ministers of Regional Development and Infrastructure, and Environmental Protection and Agriculture.

According to the ministries’ report, 3 million Georgian lari ($983,600) were allocated from the Highlander Development Fund in 2021 for the implementation of agriculture projects.

Some 1,801 Georgia settlements were granted highland status over the past year, which is about 49 percent of the total highland regions of the country. According to the April data, almost 262, 000 individuals, and 497 enterprises have highland status.

Over the past 6 years, the government support for the highland regions amounted to 1.16 billion Georgian lari ($527.8 million), of which almost 402.7 million Georgian lari ($132 million) was spent on social needs

The National Council of Georgia has reviewed the Draft Resolution on the Allocation of Resources from the Earmarking Envisaged for the Highlander Development Fund in 2022. According to the plan, some 20 million Georgian lari ($6.5 million) were allocated for infrastructure and agriculture projects in 2022, while almost 5 million Georgian lari ($1.6 million) - for “Agro Insurance” projects, “Plant Your Future” projects, processing and storage facilities development.
