BAKU, Azerbaijan, February 20. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is providing a loan of 22 million euros loan to Tbilservice Group to enhance the solid waste handling and disposal infrastructure in Georgia's capital, Tbilisi, Trend reports.
The funding will support the first waste-treatment plant in Tbilisi, as part of the city’s participation in the EBRD Green Cities programme.
Furthermore, the loan is being co-financed with concessional funds of up to 22 million euros from the Green Climate Fund.
The project will prioritize diverting waste from the sanitary landfill for thorough waste treatment, incorporating mechanical-biological processes and recovery of recyclable materials.
This initiative aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 72 percent compared to the baseline, contributing to a notable enhancement of the city's environment.
The project will also address Tbilisi’s priority needs identified under its Green City Action Plan (GCAP) and will support the implementation of a GCAP action (“solid waste action 2”) on the construction of new waste treatment facilities, in line with the strategic objective of improving the city's solid waste management system.
At the same time, the project will additionally target Tbilisi's key priorities outlined in its Green City Action Plan (GCAP), specifically supporting the execution of GCAP action 'solid waste action 2' concerning the establishment of new waste treatment facilities.
The EBRD has participated in 290 projects in Georgia to date, with overall investments totalling around 5 billion euros, 83 percent of which came from the private sector, while the EBRD's 'green' financing in Georgia accounted for 37 percent of the total investment in the country in 2023.
