Eastern Georgia without electricity after major grid failure

Georgia Materials 1 June 2006 15:23 (UTC +04:00)

(RIA Novosti) - East regions of Georgia including the country's capital, Tbilisi, were left without electricity as a result of a major grid failure, a spokesman for a Georgian electricity company said Thursday.

"The blackout occurred as a result of a major grid failure in the country," said Telasi spokesman Valery Pantsulaya, reports Trend.

He said company workers said electricity could be restored within a quarter of an hour, but said the problem was unlikely to be solved so quickly.

The blackout left Tbilisi subway idle and traffic lights out on the streets of the capital
