Local Elections Set for October 5 in Georgia

(www.civil.ge) - President Saakashvili signed a decree on August 26 setting date of the local self-governance elections for October 5, 2006, according to a press release posted on the Georgian Presidents official web-site late on August 27.

President of Georgia has decided to hold local election on October 5 after consultations with the Parliamentary Chairperson [Nino Burjanadze] and after taking into consideration a position of various political organizations. These will be first ever elections in the Georgias history, when residents of each district and town themselves elect local government, the press release reads, reports Trend.

The Georgian authorities are willing to invite large number of international observers and call on the Georgian society for activeness so that to provide maximum of transparency and democracy of the elections.

Two different tentative dates were announced earlier, but this recent date will be a final, as the President has already signed a decree.

In early August chief of the Presidents Administration Giorgi Arveladze announced that the elections would be held in early December the date which was slightly later than the one announced by the President this April, when he said that local elections will be held in, or around, November.
