Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Friday announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh to kin of five people who died in rain related incidents because of cyclone Ockhi in Kanyakumari district, The Indian EXPRESS reports.

As of now, it is reported that five people have lost their lives while 22 fishermen are missing in the district.

Earlier, Minister Rajnath Singh spoke to Director General NDRF and reviewed the situation in the areas affected by cyclone Ockhi. So far, at least nine people, five in Tamil Nadu and four in Kerala, have lost their lives after torrential rain hit southern districts of both the states. In a tweet, the home ministry said that is closely monitoring the situation.

Meanwhile, the cylcone has intensified into a severe cyclone. As per Skymet, heavyrains are expected over Lakshadweep and the rain intensity will reduce over Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
