Yemen's President has called on Zaidi Shia fighters to "return to reason" and stop fighting against government forces in the country's mountainous north, Press TV reported.
President Ali Abdullah Saleh called on "supporters of the rebellion to return to reason and accept the government's initiative to halt military operations, end bloodshed and restore peace in Saada province," AFP quoted him as saying on Friday.
The president said the fighters, also known as Huthis, cannot "make the country go back in time and re-establish a tyrannical regime which caused much suffering to the Yemeni people."
In an effort to crush the fighters, the Yemeni government has launched a fierce operation on the northern Saada province, accusing Shias of seeking to reinstate the imamate rule which ended in a 1962 coup.
The Huthis however deny the accusation saying they are defending their people against the government.
Tens of thousands of people have been displaced by the fighting launched in August 11 and the United Nations says food is running low at refugee camps because convoys cannot get through.
