Minister: Iraq seeks to reclaim Saddam Hussein's European assets

The Iraqi government is seeking to reclaim palaces and hundreds of millions of dollars held in Europe by executed Iraqi president Saddam Hussein, Baghdad's daily al-Sabah reported Tuesday.

Iraqi Finance Minister Bayan Jabr told the daily that the government had filed cases in French and Swiss courts to claim ownership of Hussein's palaces there and to claim 300 million dollars of the former president's overseas loot, DPA reported.

He told the daily this sum was only a fraction of Hussein's overseas assets, but that the value of the rest was "highly confidential."

The finance minister told al-Sabah that the secrecy was required because the government might need to contract specialised, private companies to locate the rest of the assets, and the companies would demand a 50-per-cent commission for the work.
