Explosion heard near Baghdad ministry: witnesses

A large blast was heard Tuesday near the Iraqi Ministry of Transport in the eastern part of the capital Baghdad, witnesses said, DPA reported.

Ambulances and other emergency services professionals were on their way to the scene.

On December 8, a series of deadly car bombs went off near key ministries in Baghdad, killing a total of 132 people.

Earlier Tuesday, security officials said an Iraqi policeman was killed and two others injured in a bomb blast that targeted their patrol in a neighborhood east of Mosul.

The blast went off late Monday night in the northern Iraqi town, some 400 kilometres from the capital Baghdad.

Despite successive security pushes that police say have netted hundreds of suspected insurgents this year, Mosul and its environs, an ethnically diverse area, remain the site of near-daily, deadly attacks.
