Two Iraq policeman killed in Kirkuk

Arab World Materials 25 January 2010 13:48 (UTC +04:00)

Two policemen were killed in the disputed northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk on Monday, police told the German Press Agency dpa.

The two were shot on their way to work in the Hay al-Wasti district shortly before dawn, police said, adding they believed the gunmen had used silencers.

Kirkuk, among the most ethnically diverse cities in Iraq, has long been the source of a tense dispute between Iraqi Kurdish and Arab politicians.

Many Iraqi Kurds hope to make the city, with its nearby oil fields, the capital of an independent state. Iraqi Arab politicians regard the city as an integral part of the country.
