Humanitarian and medical aid carried by a ship commissioned by Libya has been unloaded onto trucks and is expected to enter the Gaza Strip on Friday evening, a security source said, DPA reported.

The Amalthea, commissioned by Libya's Gaddafi International Charity and Development Foundation, carried 2,000 tons of aid for Gaza and sailed from Greece on July 10.

Originally heading for Gaza, the ship was diverted after being intercepted by the Israeli navy. The captain apparently agreed to change course and not try to breach Israel's naval blockade of Gaza.

The aid will be transported to the enclave through the Rafah border crossing, 40 kilometres away from el-Arish port where the ship docked on Thursday.

Egypt opened the Rafah border crossing on June 1 after Israel's attack on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla, in which nine activists were killed.

The Rafah crossing was closed in 2007, after Hamas seized control of Gaza. Since then, Egypt has occasionally opened it for three or four-day periods. This is the first time that the border has been opened indefinitely.

Though Israel relaxed the siege last month and now allows in most civilian goods, the naval blockade remains in place, as Israel says it will now allow weapons, or materials used in weapons production, to enter the Strip.
