Syrian President Bashar al-Assad will pay a two-day official visit to Belarus on Monday to hold talks with his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko, the Syrian official news agency SANA reported Sunday.

Assad is to be accompanied by a large business delegation, which is expected to include representatives of 117 companies. Members of the delegation are to take part in the second meeting of the Belarusian-Syrian Business Cooperation Council and in a business matchmaking session, said the report.

Lukashenko said while meeting with Mahmoud al-Abrash, speaker of the People's Council of Syria, in Minsk in late June, he believes Syria should become Belarus' main partner in the Middle East, Xinhua reported.

Lukashenko visited Syria in 2003 and 2005 and held talks with Assad on regional and international issues as well as bilateral cooperation between Syria and Belarus in all fields.

Syria and Belarus signed a document during the 5th session of the Syrian-Belarusian Joint Committee held in Damascus in 2009.
