Egypt welcomes invitation to attend direct peace talks

Egyptian President Hosny Mubarak accepted Friday Washington's invitation, issued earlier in the day, to take part in direct Israeli-Palestinian peace talks early next month, dpa reported.

Mubarak welcomed the call by the Middle East Quartet of the US, Russia, the United Nations and the European Union, and "expressed hope that the two sides would reach a peace agreement to end the Israeli occupation and establish an independent Palestinian state," official media reported.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will begin the talks in Washington, with the aim of reaching a comprehensive peace deal in one year.

Jordan's King Abdullah II was also invited. US President Barack Obama plans to host bilateral meetings and a dinner with the four leaders on September 1 before the launch of formal talks the following day.
