Anti-al-Qaeda chief killed in Iraq

A local chief of an anti-al-Qaeda militia was shot dead by armed men northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, a police report says.

The police did not give any further details and only said Qassem Salhub was a Sahwa (Awakening) leader in Baquba city, the capital of Diyala province, AFP reported late on Friday.

The armed men sprayed his body with bullets before fleeing the scene, the police report said.

Last Wednesday, another Sahwa member was killed and his brother wounded in the same town when a magnetic "sticky bomb" attached to their car exploded, Press TV reported.

As thousands of US troops leave Iraq, attacks against anti-al-Qaeda militia are on the rise. The militia was created in 2006 by Sunni Arab tribal chiefs to battle al-Qaeda alongside US forces.

In another incident, Iraqi security forces, working with US advisers, searched several buildings near Balad, in northern Iraq, for a suspected al-Qaeda leader allegedly responsible for attacks against Iraqi and coalition forces.

The suspect was not found, but the security forces arrested seven people suspected of having close links with the wanted man.

A school teacher recently said, "The most notable thing the American invasion brought us was the removal of Saddam Hussein. Other than that, there is not a single achievement we can speak of."
