Al-Maliki: parliament will meet to complete government formation

Incumbent Iraqi prime minister Nuri al-Maliki announced Wednesday that Iraq's parliament would meet in Baghdad on Thursday to complete the process of forming a new government, DPA reported.

Al-Maliki's comments came during a meeting of the National Alliance, parliament's main Shiite block.

Al-Maliki said the session would be "the final station on the path of resistance, challenge and determination not to allow patterns of sedition to return."

After a meeting of all of Iraq's key politicians on Tuesday evening, a television station owned by al-Maliki's Dawa Party claimed that all sides agreed to his serving another term in office, but that posts of the presidency and speaker had not yet been decided.

The political jostling to form a new government has been ongoing since the country's parliamentary elections were held on March 7.
