Iraqi security forces have arrested more than 20 wanted men, including a militant leader, two foreigners and other suspected terrorists across the war-torn country, Press TV reported.

Police forces in the northern province of Nineveh apprehended a prominent leader of the so-called Islamic State of Iraq (ISI) militant group on Saturday, according to Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Abbas Mohammed Amin al-Farahat was detained in the western part of the provincial capital Mosul, where "he charged owners of fuel stations, power generators, stores and trucks forced financial tributes on a monthly basis," a security source said.

Security forces also detained a runaway prisoner after he escaped from jail in Nineveh's Talafar district. The man was shot in the leg during a sweeping manhunt immediately following his escape.

Also in western Anbar province, security forces arrested eight suspects, including two Syrian nationals, for involvement in acts of violence.

The arrests came following multiple raids in Fallujah, al-Qaem, al-Tharthar, al-Karma and al-Amiriya, where three caches of arms were seized.

The discovered weapons reportedly included Katyusha rockets and improvised explosive devices.

A dozen wanted men were rounded up in villages and valleys south and southwest of the oil-rich city of Kirkuk. A number of AK47 assault rifles, explosive charges and other explosive materials were also found during the operation.
