Germany urged to freeze arms sales to Egypt

Germany's three main opposition parties called on their government to impose a freeze on arms sales to Egypt and halt its financial aid for the Arab country in aftermath of brutal crackdown on Egyptian protesters, press reports said Monday.

The head of the Green faction, Juergen Trittin urged a suspension of arms deliveries to Egypt, in addition to a temporary stop of the European Union's financial assistance for Cairo.

Germany alone has reportedly pledged 200 million euros in development aid for Egypt for the 2011 and the 2012.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the radical leftist party The Left, Gesine Loetzsch pointed out that German arms sales to Egypt in 2009 totalled 77.5 million euros, IRNA reported.

In other related news, the foreign policy spokesman of the faction of the Social Democratic Party, Rolf Muetzenich called for political and economic consequences because of the deadly repression in Egypt.

A very close ally of Mubarak regime, Germany has stopped well short of demanding the ouster of the embattled Egyptian president.

Berlin has yet to take a clear stance on all-out support for the Egyptians' protest movement.
