Violence, shots fired in Alexandria

Arab World Materials 2 February 2011 02:51 (UTC +04:00)

Violence erupted late Tuesday in Alexandria, Egypt's second largest city, shortly after President Hosny Mubarak announced that he would leave office at the end of his term in September, dpa reported.

Arabic satellite channels broadcast what sounded like live rounds being fired, with tanks moving in the streets. Demonstrators appeared to be throwing rocks.

Demonstrators have been demanding Mubarak's ouster during a week of protests, and many seem unsatisfied with the president's announcement that he would not seek re-election after nearly 30 years in power.
