India condemned the detentions and attacks on foreign journalists covering the unrest in Cairo and issued a travel advisory for Indian journalists planning to cover the protests, DPA reported.

"Such incidents are totally unacceptable and must stop immediately," External Affairs Minister SM Krishna said.

The United States and the group Reporters Without Borders charged that Egyptian authorities were targeting journalists, particularly television crews. At least two dozen journalists and human rights activists have been detained or arrested although some have since been released.

Journalists and crews from Indian news channels said they were taken into preventive custody while covering the protests and later released. They also alleged that the authorities either confiscated their cameras or burned their videotapes and film.

Krishna called late Thursday for the release of all those remaining in custody.

"Violence has no place in any civil society and must be strongly condemned by all right-thinking persons," he said.

India's foreign office also issued an advisory for media professionals intending to cover the protests to get suitable accreditation, officials said.
