Dozens of Lebanese and Egyptian nationals gathered Friday near the Egyptian embassy to celebrate president Hosny Mubarak's decision to relinquish power, dpa reported.
They opened bottles of champagne and lit fireworks near the heavily guarded Egyptian embassy in the outskirts of Beirut.
"We are proud of the Egyptians," chanted the crowd as they waved Lebanese and Egyptian flags. "The people toppled the regime with their steadfastness," read one banner.
Lebanese police tightened security around the embassy complex.
The celebrations came an hour after Egyptian Vice President Omar Suleiman announced that Mubarak has decided to step down, after weeks of unrest.
