Egypt must move toward an "irreversible" path to democracy following the resignation Friday of longtime ruler Hosny Mubarak, US Vice President Joe Biden said.

"The transition that is taking place must be irreversible change" and lead to a "negotiated path" to democracy," Biden said in Louisville, Kentucky, dpa reported.

Biden's comments were the first publicly by a senior US official since Egyptian Vice President Omar Suleiman announced Mubarak had stepped down after 30 years of rule and asked the army to take control of the country.

Biden called Mubarak's departure a "pivotal moment in history," and added that "the future of Egypt will be determined by Egyptian people."

Obama was to make a statement at 1830 GMT. Obama was informed Friday morning of Mubarak's intention to resign and watched Suleiman's announcement on television, CNN reported
