India Saturday hailed Egyptian President Hosny Mubarak's resignation and hoped there would be a peaceful transition of power to establish democratic governance, DPA reported.
"We welcome the decision of President Mubarak to step down in deference to the wishes of the people of Egypt," External Affairs Minister SM Krishna said.
"We also welcome the commitment of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces to ensure a peaceful transition of power in a time-bound manner to establish an open and democratic framework of governance."
Krishna said India was proud of its traditionally close relations with Egypt and wished its people peace, stability and prosperity.
Mubarak stepped down Friday and handed power to the military after 18 days of protests against his three-decade rule.
