Egypt allows Iran warships to pass through Suez Canal
Egypt granted permission Friday for two Iranian warships to pass through the Suez Canal, DPA reported.
The Egyptian Defence Ministry said earlier that Iran has asked the country to allow its warships to pass through the canal, which links the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea.
Iran said the warships, which were currently positioned in the Red Sea, were not carrying any military weapons.
Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman previously called the likely passing of the ships "a provocation."
Lieberman was echoing concerns in Israel that Egyptian president Hosny Mubarak's recent ouster may usher in an anti-Israeli government.
