German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle called Friday for the European Union to declare an embargo on all arms sales to Libya after its fierce crackdown on pro-democracy protesters, DPA reported.

Speaking in Berlin, he said the EU should also refuse to supply any equipment at all to the various Libyan security forces and declare a ban on visits by Libyan leader Moamer Gaddafi and his family. He called for their assets in the EU to be frozen.

"The time is over for issuing appeals, it's time to act," said Westerwelle, adding he hoped the EU would agree quickly to the moves.
