Russia rejects international military action in Libya

Arab World Materials 20 March 2011 12:15 (UTC +04:00)

Russia has expressed "regret" over the international military strikes against Libya and called for a ceasefire in the North African country, dpa reported.

"Moscow notes with regret this armed action, taken in conjunction with the hastily passed UN Security Council resolution 1973," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement posted on its website Sunday.

The government called for an immediate end to the "bloodshed" in Libya to allow for dialogue.

Russia on Thursday abstained from voting on the UN resolution which authorizes the use of force and the creation of a no-fly zone in Libya, the scene of clashes between government forces and rebels.
