Up to 1.5 million people need help as a result of the fighting in Libya, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said Tuesday, DPA reported.

Among them are more than 400,000 who have left since the start of the unrest last month as well as 600,000 who remained in the North African country, an OCHA spokeswoman said.

The numbers were growing daily, she added.

The UN estimates that close to 440,000 have crossed from Libya into neighbouring countries. A daily stream of 2,500 Libyans is arriving in Egypt.

Expatriates living in Libya are also leaving in droves, with nearly 218,000 crossing to Tunisia and more than 174,000 going to Egypt.
