Gaza Strip militias have agreed to halt attacks on Israel, beginning at 11 pm local time (2000 GMT) Thursday, a leader of one of the Palestinian factions said, dpa reported.

Talal Abu Zerifa, a leader of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, told the German Press Agency dpa that the ceasefire was agreed to after Arab and Turkish mediation. However, he said, the factions were still awaiting a response from Israel to the proposal.

The ceasefire comes after Israel killed five Palestinians Thursday in air and ground strikes, launched after an anti-tank missile fired from the Gaza Strip targeted an Israeli school bus, seriously injuring a teenager.

As the Israeli strikes continued, the militias launched more than 45 missiles and mortar shells at Israel.
