A Lebanese and a Palestinian were killed and two others injured during a clash Thursday between Lebanese security forces and residents in South Lebanon over attempts to ban illegal construction, Lebanese police said, DPA reported.

According to police reports, the clash started when residents east of the southern port city of Tyre attacked a convoy for the security forces and set one of the military vehicles on fire.

"The citizens tried to stop the security members by stoning and shooting at them, which forced the security members to fire back, and that resulted in the killing of two civilians," the police report stated.

The security force was heading to the area under orders from the Lebanese government to stop illegal construction of houses.

Interior Minister Ziad Baroud said earlier in April that his ministry would crack down on construction violations across Lebanon.
