A police officer and a government employee were gunned down by unidentified assailants in two separate attacks in Baghdad late on Sunday, an Interior Ministry source said.

A police officer was killed by gunmen using pistols with silencers near a gas station on the Palestine street in eastern Baghdad on Sunday night, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

In a separate incident, a government employee was killed by assailants using automatic weapons with silencers in Shaab district in northeastern Baghdad, the source said.

Assailants who committed both attacks fled the scenes and the police were launching a manhunt, the source added.

Earlier in the day, six policemen were killed in two attacks in Baghdad and the western province of Anbar.

The Iraqi security forces and government officials have been the constant targets of attacks as extremists like al-Qaida attempt to carry out high-profile attacks and assassinations in order to undermine Iraq's tenuous security.
