A US airstrike targeting a group of Islamist militants killed at least six fighters Thursday in Yemen, a Yemeni security official said.
The strike targeted the southern Abyan province, where militant groups linked to the terrorist network al-Qaeda have taken advantage of the now five-month popular upheaval against President Ali Abdullah Salah, dpa reported.
Amid the instability in Yemen, the militants have taken over some villages in the area and seized police stations.
Yemeni security officials said Thursday's strike hit a police station in the town of Mudiya, killing six men who were sleeping inside.
The US has been aiding Yemen to combat al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsulaand allied militants.
