A fighter jet crashed during a routine training mission late Tuesday in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), killing its pilot, the General Command of the Gulf nation's Armed Forces said Wednesday, Xinhua reported.

First Lieutenant Suhail Mubarak Abdullah Al Dhahiri died during the crash, which occurred in the UAE airspace, the state news agency WAM reported, without disclosing further details about the incident.

In April, the pilot of a UAE F-16, sent by the country's government to help patrol Libya's no-fly zone, ejected safely when his jet crashed on landing at an airbase in southern Italy.

The UAE pledged in March six F-16s and six Mirage warplanes to the coalition to enforce the no-fly zone over Libya.
