People gathered outside the Police Academy on the outskirts of Cairo where Mubarak, his two sons, former interior minister Habib al-Adli and six senior policemen are to appear when the trial opens amid tight security.

Mubarak, 83, was forced to step down in a popular revolt in February. His appearance at the trial will be the first since his ouster.

He has been receiving medical treatment at a hospital in the Red Sea resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh since April, when he reportedly suffered a heart attack.

A plane carrying Mubarak from Sharm el-Sheikh has just landed at an airport in Almaza outside Cairo and he is to be taken inside an ambulance to the court building, state Egyptian TV reported.

The trial proceedings is to be broadcast live on official TV. This is the first time an Egyptian ruler has been put on trial
