The United Nations Security Council condemned Thursday the series of terrorist attacks in Iraq on Monday that killed some 70 people, Xinhuanet reported.

"The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the series of terrorist attacks that occurred on Aug. 15 in Iraq, which caused scores of deaths and injuries and damage," said Hardeep Singh Puri, Indian ambassador to the UN, who is also Security Council president for the month of August, in a press statement read to reporters.
In the statement, the Security Council stressed "the need to bring perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism to justice, and urged all states, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, to cooperate actively with Iraqi authorities in this regard."

The Security Council reaffirmed the need "to combat by all means, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations, threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts."

"The members of the Security Council reiterated that no terrorist act can reverse the path towards peace, democracy and reconstruction in Iraq, which is supported by the people and the government of Iraq and the international community," said the statement.
A series of bomb attacks took place in seven provinces in central and northern Iraq on Monday, leaving nearly 70 people killed and hundreds of others wounded, marking a new escalation of violence in the country months ahead of the proposed departure of U.S. troops.
