A tropical storm in Oman has killed 14 people, police in the Arab Gulf country said on Friday, dpa reported.

The storm, which reached Oman on Tuesday, brought heavy rain to the south of the country, causing floods that damaged hundreds of cars and houses, weather officials said.

Omani state television showed Friday footage of people standing on cars submerged by floodwaters. Helicopters were rushed to haul them to safety. The heaviest damage is believed to have occurred in the southern province of Sadh, where many houses were destroyed or damaged.

Some officials estimated the damage to be worth more than 80 million dollars. In 2010, tropical cyclone Phet killed 50 people in Oman and inflicted damages costing 780 million dollars.
