Syrian opposition activists were to hold a symbolic funeral on Friday to mourn the Arab League, saying it failed to take decisive action to end the unrest in the country dpa reported

Syrians in Cairo said dozens will gather near the headquarters of the Arab League and hold funeral prayers and a mass to pressure the organization to freeze Syria's membership.

The Arab League committee for Syria, headed by Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassim Bin Jabr Al Thani, will meet later on Friday in Cairo to discuss the Arab League Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi's meetings with members of the opposition over the past days.

Their meeting comes ahead of a foreign ministers emergency meeting on Saturday.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is under pressure from Arab and Western governments to end his regime's violent crackdown, which the United Nations says has killed more than 3,500 people.

The Arab League has accused the Syrian government of failing to implement a plan it drafted to end the months-long violence.
