A US-Egyptian journalist, Mona Eltahawy, was beaten and sexually abused by police in Cairo after being arrested during a demonstration near Tahrir Square, she wrote Thursday.
In a detailing of her ordeal on Twitter, Eltahawy accused the police of blindfolding and groping her, dpa reported.
"I lost count how many hands tried to get into my trousers," she said.
She described 12 hours in custody, later writing, "Can barely type - must go xray arms after CSF pigs beat me."
X-rays showed her left arm and right had been broken.
Eltahawy is a dual US-Egyptian citizen and writes for publications including the Toronto Star the Jerusalem Report and Denmark's Politiken, she said her joint citizenship helped save her from a worse ordeal.
A military police officer later offer apologies for the incident.
