Arab League (AL) chief Nabil al-Arabi on Wednesday urged the Syrian government to immediately halt violence and provide convenience to the Arab observers, Xinhua reported.

Arabi called on the Syrian government to shoulder its responsibilities to protect civilians, implement its pledges to stop violence, release prisoners and pull back all the military forces from cities and populated areas that witnessed peaceful protests.

He expressed his worries about the escalating violence in several areas of Syria, including Idlib, Homs and Deir al-Zour.

"It is necessary to move quickly for providing an appropriate atmosphere for the AL observers to proceed (with) their mission," said Arabi.

An advance team of observers, headed by Samir Saif al-Yazal, will arrive in Damascus on Thursday to discuss with Syrian officials about implementing the protocol and arrangements to dispatch the Arab observers.

Syria signed the AL observer protocol on Monday in Cairo after the pan-Arab group threatened to refer the Syrian crisis to the United Nations Security Council.
