The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) said on Saturday that an officer belonging to United Nations - African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) was killed and another injured in an attack by unknown gunmen in Sudan's Darfur region, the Sudanese Media Center (SMC) reported.

"An officer belonging to UNAMID was killed Saturday and another was injured in an attack by masked gunmen at Silaia area in Darfur, " the SMC quoted SAF spokesman Al-Sawarmy Khalid Saad as saying, Xinhua reported.

"A UNAMID administrative patrol came under attack by unknown masked rebels at Silaia area between the cities of Al-Diein and Nyala in Darfur," the spokesman added.

He further said the attackers seized some weapons and vehicles and that the Sudanese army arrived at the scene shortly after the assault and aided the victims.

UNAMID personnel have encountered repeated attacks by armed groups and have lost around 30 of its personnel since its deployment in the region in early 2008.
