Official Damascus has agreed to accept Kofi Annan as the special envoy of the UN and the League of Arab States, the Al-Jazeera TV Channel reported on Monday.

The former UN secretary general will go to Syria on March 10.

Together with an assistant from the Arab states, whose name has not been yet reported, Annan will deal with peaceful settlement of the conflict between the Syrian authorities and the opposition.

Anti-government protests which began in mid-March have persisted in Syria for almost a year. Daily reports are being received about the deaths of people, both civilians and the security forces. According to the UN, more than 7,500 people have been killed as a result of clashes in Syria.
