Bahrain was considering a Danish request to transfer to Demark a detained activist, who has been on hunger strike for 59 days, a minister said Saturday, dpa reported.

The authorities moved activist Abdulhadi al-Khawaja, who is also a Danish citizen, from a security clinic to a military hospital because of his poor health.

Bahraini Foreign Minister Khalid al-Khalifa said the transfer request had been made by his Danish counterpart Villy Sovndal, the state news agency reported. He said the judiciary would decide on the issue.

Al-Khawaja, 52, is serving a life sentence for his role in last year's uprising by the island country's Shiite majority to demand more rights from the ruling Sunni royal family.

International human rights groups such as Amnesty International have called on the Bahraini authorities to release al-Khawaja and allow him to travel to Denmark for medical treatment.
