Middle East group encourages international help to Palestinians

The diplomatic group on the Middle East peace process on Wednesday called for continued work to assist the democratic and institutional building efforts of the Palestinian Authority (PA), DPA reported.

The United Nations, the European Union, the United States and Russia - known as the quartet - issued a statement following a fresh session in Washington, calling for the international community to ensure funding of 1.1 billion dollars to help the PA's fiscal demands this year.

The statement voiced concern over the "increasing fragility" of developments on the ground and called for both Israel and the PA to work together constructively to deal with financial and economic problems facing the Palestinians.

The quartet reaffirmed its commitments to examine "possible mechanism ... to advance peace efforts and strengthen the PA's ability to meet the full range of civil and security needs of the Palestinian people, both now and in the future state."
