A powerful explosion hit Al-Meidan district in Damascus today. Several people were injured, SANA agency said.

According to the preliminary reports, the explosion killed three and injured ten people. It is reported that the explosion occurred near the Zein al-Abedin mosque.

The explosions occur in Syria, although an armistice was announced between the armed opposition groups and al-Assad's forces in mid-April within Joint Special Envoy of the United Nations and the League of Arab States on the Syrian crisis Kofi Annan's plan. The first group of UN observers monitoring the observance of the cease-fire agreement arrived in the country. At present, about 15 peacekeepers work in Syria.

Anti-government protests have persisted in Syria since March 2011. Daily reports are being received about the deaths of people, both civilian and the security forces. According to UN statistics, the total number of victims in the country exceeds 10,000. Syrian officials have said that clashes with the armed opposition have killed more than 2,500 servicemen and law enforcement officials of Syria, against which there are well-armed militants, and the number of civilian casualties exceeded 3,200.
