UN under-secretary-general for peacekeeping Herve Ladsous arrived in the Syrian capital of Damascus late Friday to check on the UN observer mission in Syria. "I have come here to look at the way things are going," Ladsous, who came along with UN representative to the Middle East Judi Helton, told Xinhua upon arrival.

Ladsous said the UN observer mission aims to achieve a cessation of violence in Syria and to work towards the cooperation of all those involved in order to create space for a political dialogue.

He said the mission will also seek access to detainees and human rights violations in the unrest-hit country.
