A US Navy ship opened fire Monday off the coast of the United Arab Emirates when a small motorized boat in the Gulf quickly approached without stopping, the Navy said.
After issuing a series of warnings, the USNS Rappahannock resorted to "lethal force," firing rounds from a .50-caliber machine gun, the Navy said in a statement, dpa reported.
The Navy did not provide details about the lethal force, but broadcasters quoted unnamed US officials as saying one person had been killed and three wounded.
Information about what kind of craft was involved, who was operating the vessel and whether it posed a legitimate threat was not provided.
