United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called for an immediate end to violence against civilians in Syria, Press TV reported.

In a Thursday message to a one-day international consultative meeting on the Syrian situation in Tehran, Ban called for an end to the abductions and killings of civilians in Syria.

Officials and representatives from over 30 countries are participating in the summit.

Ban expressed regret that, despite the fact that both the government and the insurgents have agreed on the six-point peace plan, proposed by the UN-Arab League special envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan, armed conflicts still continue in the country.

The statement warned that the ensuing violence has increased the likelihood of a long-term war in Syria and disintegration of the country, posing a serious threat to the entire Middle East.

Ban went on to say that the entire global community is responsible to find a peaceful solution to the Syrian issue aimed at putting an end to the wave of abductions and bloodshed in the country.

The UN chief also extended his gratitude to Tehran for holding such a conference amid the sensitive situation in Syria.
